New Accessibility Features
(ADA) Add close button to mobile Map Links modal
The Map Links button on mobile and the corresponding modal with the newly added close button.
Align dropdown arrow for categories with no checkboxes
The newly styled category arrows are now aligned with each other, even in the absence of a checkbox.
(ADA) Alert screen reader users location has opened after clicking on search result.
- Description: Previously, SRUs had no idea that a location had been opened after they pressed on a search result. There was no, non-visual notification. Now, when a SRU presses on a location, the screen reader alerts them that location details have been opened.
(ADA) Alert screen reader user if location details are open or closed
- Description: Previously, when SRUs used the minimize location button, it wouldn’t matter if the location was open or closed. SRUs would only hear “minimize location, button”. This makes it especially confusing for SRUs to know of the current state of the location. Now, the minimize/maximize button accurately reflects what SRUs can expect from clicking on the button.
(ADA) Alert screen reader user Explore the Map modal has appeared
The Explore the Map modal that appears when a SRU navigates to the map.
(ADA) Allow Leaflet and Mapbox attribution links to be navigable by screen readers
The Leaflet and Mapbox attribution links that are now navigable by a screen reader.
(ADA) Allow screen reader user to navigate all elements, including images, in search results list
- Description: Previously, SRUs were only able to navigate by the entire search result and not the elements within each result. Now, they can navigate in the order displayed in the screenshot below.
The order the screen reader navigates through each search result.
(ADA) Structure search results list so that screen reader users know how many results there are and alert them when search results have been returned
- Description: We show the number of results in the list after a user completes a search, but this information wasn’t accessible to the screen reader because the search result list itself wasn’t structured properly. Now, once searching has completed, SRUs are notified that search has finished and the number of results they can expect to have.
(ADA) Pull screen reader focus back to search when location is closed
- Description: Previously, when SRUs would exit a location they entered from searching, their focus would jump back to the beginning of the search sidebar. This is a poor user experience if the search results list is long. Now, when a screen user exits a location, their focus is snapped back to the last place they left off in the search results list.
(ADA) Alert screen reader users when they are on the My Location button
- Description: SRUs used to have no idea what the My Location button did since all that they were notified with was “button”. Now, when they navigate to the My Location, they are accurately alerted to what the button does.
(ADA) Alert screen reader users when they are at the boundaries of a full-screen panorama
- Description: SRUs had no idea when they entered a panorama or when they were about to exit one. There were no clear boundaries, and this led to a poor, unusable user experience. Now, SRUs are alerted when they enter or exit the panorama.
(ADA) Add close button to Directions Share modal
The Share Directions modal now has a close button.
(ADA) Alert screen reader users when they are copying the URL to a location
- Description: When the URL to a location is copied, a notification appears letting the user now that the link has been copied. This notification wasn’t available for SRUs previously but now is.

New Accessibility Features
Notification of checkbox state for Level Selector and Zoom Control toggles on mobile devices
- Description: SRUs on iOS and Android devices previously were unable to know whether the Level Selector or Zoom Control settings were enabled or disabled in the Map Controls panel. Now, they are alerted about the state of the settings when they focus on each individual setting as well as when they change the settings themselves for confirmation.
The Level Selector and Zoom Control settings in the Map Controls panel.
Navigation of Map Markers in alphabetical order
- Description: Previously, there was no order to the way SRUs would navigate map markers sequentially. Now, when SRUs are navigating map markers, they are navigated in alphabetical order, category by category. The last checked category is the first category to be navigated, while the first checked category is the last to be navigated.
Snap Screen Reader focus to updated location content
- Description: When SRUs click on one of the media buttons in location details, their focus is now snapped to the next arrow within the media viewer. Work is planned to snap the focus to the actual content itself, but as a temporary measure to get SRUs closer to the updated media content, their focus is sent to the shared next arrow button.
The media buttons that, when pressed by a screen reader, will send focus to the next button in the location content area.
Snap Screen Reader focus to Map Links and Map Controls modals when they appear on mobile
- Description: SRUs’ focus is now snapped to the corresponding modal that appears when they click Map Links or Map Controls on a mobile device.

The thumbnail position counter that is now read back to screen readers whenever the user goes forwards or backwards.
New Features
Disable Google points of interest from appearing when clicking on base map tiles
- Description: Previously, when users clicked randomly on our maps that used Google as the base map layer, they could get Google’s markers to appear. This was a confusing user experience that also contributed to a number of issues with maps on Google. Users can no longer get Google markers to appear.
New query strings to hide Map Controls
- There are two new query strings that URLs can take advantage of: &mch (Map Controls Hide) and &hh (Home Hide). These two query strings will hide all of the map controls or just the home button respectively. These query strings are frontend-only and do not require toggling settings in the CMS.

Prevent Sidebar from Closing when a Location is Open
- Description: Previously, when pressing the button to close the sidebar if a location was open, the sidebar would close and the location would stay open. This is a confusing user experience. Now, when a location is open, the sidebar button is greyed out to indicate it isn’t usable.
The locked sidebar hide button with a location open.
Default to Display Above-ground Levels in Level Selector
- Description: Occasionally, Level 0 would not be centered in the Level Selector. Instead, it would be one of the “upper” floors, which would then show more basement floors by default. The default position of Level 0 has been shifted down.

New Features
Paginate Find Event Space Search Results
- Description: Improvements for the search results for the Space Planner “Find an Event Space” search. We found that on searches with a significant amount of results, results were being capped. To solve this and improve performance, we added a pagination concept to the results. 20 results are loaded on each page and the user can select “next” to view the next results.
Display Category Markers in Route Builder
- Description: Wayfinding Route Builder was updated to help improve with things like placing nodes of non-accessible entrances and areas on campus so that both datasets can be viewed at the same time.
Link Back to CMS After Reset Password Flow
- Description: Previously, when a new user (or reset password user) would create a password, once it was saved successfully, they received a success message, but there was not a clear way to return to the CMS to login unless the user knew the URL. Now we display the CMS URL on the success page after the user creates their password.
“Don’t Notify User” Setting When Creating a New CMS User
- Description: Shibboleth users do not need to setup passwords in the CMS, however, they do need user accounts so they can be associated with roles. We needed the ability to create a user without sending them the emails to create a password and login. Now there is a checkbox that, if checked, will not send those emails when a user is created.
Note: If this is checked and it is on a Shibboleth user, the user will not be able to login until they go through the reset password flow! The new email notification setting is available when a new CMS user is created in the Account page.

Smoother Wayfinding User Experience when Adjusting Markers
- Description: Previously, when a user moved the start or end markers for wayfinding, the map would zoom in and pan to display the route. This could be a bit jarring to end users, so we made a few changes.
-
The map view no longer zooms in and out when users drag the Wayfinding markers on the map. The zoom remains the same and the end-user can adjust as they would like.
-
There is now a Show Full Route button to zoom the map to fit the entire route.
-
When end users choose to drag and drop markers (instead of search), the wayfinding box will automatically minimize to display more map real estate.
