The Location Manager is a single interface where you can search, filter, edit, preview, and publish location changes. Whether you're updating one location or hundreds, the Location Manager provides a streamlined workflow while keeping changes safe as revisions until you're ready to publish.
Looking to make the same change across many locations at once? See Bulk Edit: changing multiple locations at once for the full bulk-editing guide and common workflow recipes.
Accessing the Location Manager
Granting or revoking access
The Location Manager is gated behind a single permission: bulk_edit. CMS users with it get full access: searching, filtering, editing one location or many, previewing, and publishing. Users without it see an Access Denied message when they try to open the page.
A user with role-management access can grant or revoke bulk_edit from your CMS user and role settings. Changes take effect the next time the user reloads the page.
Bulk Edit tab in the CMS
The access the Location Manager, select the new Bulk Edit tab along the top bar in your Map CMS.
The page at a glance
At the top of the page you'll find:
- Search: free-text search across your locations
- Filters: narrow the list by category, visibility, status, level, and more
- Filter visibility menu: choose which filters are visible, and hide the ones you don't use
- Columns: choose which fields appear as columns in the table
- Preview: opens the live map in a new tab with your revisions applied
Below that is the locations table: one row per location, with checkboxes on the left for selecting. When you select any locations, a selection toolbar appears at the top of the table with Edit, Delete, and (when applicable) Publish actions.
Finding locations
Search
The search bar matches against location names and keyword fields. Searches happen as you type and combine with any filters you have set.
Filters
By default, you'll see the most-used filters:
- Category: pick one or more categories to filter by
- Visible: show only visible, only hidden, or all
- Private: show only public, only private, or all
- Status: Published (no pending revisions) or unpublished (one or more pending revisions exist)
- Keywords and Labels
- Shape: markers, polygons, circles, rectangles, polymarkers, polylines
You can also enable optional filters from the filter visibility menu (the small icon next to the search bar):
- Floor Level: appears only on maps that have levels configured
- Last Updated: within the last N days, weeks, or months; more than N ago; or between two specific dates
- Updated By: which CMS user last edited the location
Your filter visibility choices are saved, so the next time you open the page it looks the way you left it.
Selecting locations
Use the checkbox at the beginning of each row to select one or more locations.
When at least one location is selected, a selection toolbar appears above the table with actions available for that selection, such as Edit, Publish, or Delete.
Customizing columns
The Columns button opens a checklist of every field that can appear in the table. Turn columns on or off to match your current task:
- Doing a content audit? Turn on Description and Keywords.
- Checking who's been busy? Turn on Last Updated and Updated By.
- Cleaning up styling? Turn on Style and Shape.
Like filters, your column choices stick.
Editing a single location
Click any editable cell in the table to open the single-field editor. Make your change and save.
Saving creates a revision for that location. The change will not appear on the public map until it is published through the standard CMS publishing workflow.
The location's row shows a revision indicator so you know there are unpublished changes pending. The location won't update on the public map until you publish.
Tip: Use single-cell edits for one-off tweaks. When you need to make the same change across many locations, use Bulk Edit instead.
Previewing and publishing your changes
Preview lets you check your revisions against the live map before they go public. When you're ready, there are three ways to publish, depending on what you've selected.
How revisions work
Changes made in the Location Manager create revisions, just like edits made elsewhere in the Map CMS.
Revisions are not visible on the public map until they are published. They can be previewed before publishing and reviewed from the Publish tab alongside other pending map changes.
This means you can:
- Make changes without immediately affecting visitors
- Review changes before publishing
- Publish revisions from either the Location Manager or the CMS Publish tab
- Group multiple changes together into a single publishing workflow
Preview your changes
The Preview button at the top right opens the live map in a new browser tab, with all of your pending revisions applied as if they were already published.
Preview uses the same revision preview system available from the Publish tab. It displays all unpublished revisions for the map, regardless of where they were created.
The badge on the Preview button shows how many locations currently have unpublished revisions across the entire map, including revisions created outside the Location Manager. If you see a small number, you're caught up; if you see "99+", there's a lot waiting.
Preview is meant for review, not visitors: the link is single-use and only works for a short period of time. It's the safest way to answer "what will this look like once I publish?" before you commit.
Publish one location
On a location's row, select the Unpublished badge in the Status column to publish that location directly. This publishes all pending revisions for that location at once, not only your most recent change. A confirmation prompt shows the location name; click Confirm and the changes go live.
Important: Publishing a location publishes all pending revisions for that location, not just the change you most recently made.
Publish a selection
Tick the checkboxes for the locations you want, then click Publish in the selection toolbar. You'll see a confirmation showing how many locations are about to publish. After confirming, a progress toast shows the publish in progress and a success message when it's done.
When you publish from the Location Manager, whether a single location or a selection, the work happens server-side and usually takes a few seconds. A status toast shows progress and confirms when it's complete.
Publish from the Map CMS
Location Manager revisions are part of the standard Map CMS publishing workflow.
All pending revisions appear in the Publish tab regardless of where they were created. You can review and publish them from the Publish tab alongside other map changes.
Resolving edit conflicts
If another CMS user edits a location between the time you load the page and the time you save your changes, the save may fail due to a conflict.
The Location Manager will identify the affected location and let you know that your revision was not saved.
To resolve the conflict:
- Refresh the page.
- Review the latest version of the location.
- Reapply your changes if needed.
- Save again.
Tip: If multiple users are working in the same area of the map, coordinate responsibilities ahead of time to reduce conflicts.
Tips for Success
- Use filters to narrow large location sets before editing.
- Customize columns to focus on the fields most relevant to your task.
- Preview revisions before publishing.
- Remember that publishing a location publishes all pending revisions for that location.
- Review pending revisions in the Publish tab before pushing changes live.
- Coordinate with teammates when working on large editing projects.
