Does the platform work with kiosks?
Yes, the platform is touch-screen friendly and can be used on kiosks that have internet access and a web browser.
However, it is important to note that the platform is not specifically designed or optimized for kiosk hardware. Because of this, performance and user experience can vary depending on the kiosk’s screen size, resolution, and configuration.
We strongly recommend testing your map on your intended kiosk hardware before making a purchase or deploying at scale.
Key considerations:
- Internet connection is required to load the map
- Screen size and orientation matter. Very tall and narrow screens may not provide an ideal experience
- User flow should be evaluated, especially if users can navigate away from the map
When used “as is” on a kiosk, the following functionality will still be available:
- Links that navigate to external pages
- Google or Mapbox directions (including off-campus routing)
- 360 panorama and VR experiences
Does Concept3D provide kiosk hardware?
No, Concept3D does not provide or support kiosk hardware.
We are happy to provide guidance based on what we have seen work well, but we do not have a certified hardware list or dedicated kiosk integrations.
Can I use a second map instance for my kiosk?
Yes. Many clients choose to create a separate map instance specifically for kiosk use, and this is our preferred approach for delivering an optimal kiosk experience.
This allows you to tailor the experience by limiting or adjusting functionality such as:
- External links
- Directions
- 360 or VR experiences
A second map instance is an additional cost. Please reach out to your Partner Success Manager to discuss pricing and best practices.
Do you provide kiosk-specific best practices or support?
We’re happy to share guidance and answer questions to the best of our ability, but kiosks are not a formally supported or tested solution.
If you are evaluating kiosks, we recommend:
- Testing your map on the actual device before purchase
- Sharing vendor questions with our team for guidance
- Validating usability in a real-world environment
Can clients build a fully custom kiosk experience?
Yes, but this is typically only a good fit for teams with strong technical resources and a need for a highly customized experience.
By purchasing API access, your developers can build a completely custom kiosk interface and control the user experience more tightly than the standard map allows.
Through the API, your team can access:
- Locations and categories (content)
- Map styles
- Search functionality
- Wayfinding
- Map tile rendering
This approach requires significant development effort and is best suited for clients who want a fully tailored UI or have specific requirements that cannot be met through the standard platform.
