Creating a Property View in Google Analytics 4
To create a property view in Google Analytics 4 to utilize analytics in your Events Calendar, follow the steps below:
1. Login to Google Analytics and go to Admin and select your account. If you have more than one account, be sure to select the correct one.
2. Under the Property column, select the Create Property button at the top.
3. Name the property and be sure to select a name that is easily identified. For example: “Localist Events Calendar”. Select the proper timezone. Select Next at the bottom of the page.
4. Enter business details specific to your organization. Select Create.
5. Next, set up the data stream. Select the Web button.
6. Enter your map's custom domain (or placeholder URL - example.enterprise.localist.com) in the Website URL box and add a name for the data stream. Again, be sure to make it something easily identifiable like “Localist Events Calendar”. Once this information is complete, select Create Stream.
7. We recommend leaving the default Enhanced measurement settings toggled on. However, if there are Enhanced Measurements you would like to NOT track, select the Settings icon and toggle off any areas you would like Google not to track.
8. Your new property and data stream are complete!
Setting up Custom Definitions
You can get additional information about your users if you set up Custom Definitions in Google Analytics 4. There are a few we recommend:
| Custom Dimension | User Property/Parameter | Description / Why |
| Category | event_category | This is a legacy dimension from Google Universal Analytics. |
| Label | event_label | This is a legacy dimension from Google Universal Analytics. Additional information with specific actions will be stored here. |
| Form Id | form_id | This helps identify when users are interacting with forms like Public Event Submission Form, Digest Builder, or Widget Builder. |
| Search Term | search_term | This helps track which search terms users are looking for. |
Here's how to set these up:
1. Login to Google Analytics and go to Admin and select your account. If you have more than one account, be sure to select the correct one.
2. Go to "Custom definitions"
3. Click "Create custom dimension"
4. Enter in the "Dimension name" and "Event parameter" from the table above for the custom dimension you'd like to add.
5. Click "Save". Repeat for any and all custom dimensions you would like to add.
That's it! Google Analytics 4 will track any additional information for the custom dimensions you add through these steps.
