Universities have more ways than ever for students, faculty, and staff to reserve campus spaces. But plenty of them still deal with crowded rooms in high-demand spaces, even while classrooms in the next buildings are half empty. With no reliable picture of whether and how their spaces actually get used, the underlying problem is not solved.

There’s a question most colleges and universities don’t think to ask themselves, often because they have no way of getting a reliable answer:
